Goodbye Goldie

Tonight, Kylie had a fun fair at her school. One of the games was throw a ball and if it lands in the fish ball you get a goldfish. For most of the night I tried to steer her away from this game, I did not want fish to take home. She went off with some friends and comes bouncing back with 2 fish. My stomach dropped. She was so happy. She had got 2 fish, one for her and one for Karly. She had them named and was so excited this was her first pet.

On the way home we called a friend (thanks Shelley) to get some fish food since I did not feel like stopping at a store to get some. I held the bag for Kylie and noticed that "Goldie" was not moving one bit, just floating around. Compared to Nemo (the other one), he didn't look so good. I showed Shelley and she confirmed that he kicked the bucket and was in fish heaven. The second Kylie heard that she burst into full on tears and sobbing. Her fish was dead, she loved him and he couldn't be dead, what was she going to do. This lasted all the way home, into the house. She just sat with the bag in her lap crying her eyes out. I told her to come over so we could put the other fish in a vase and we would take care of Goldie (i.e. flush him down the toilet). Well she freaked out as Goldie lay there on the counter. She wanted to keep him and would not let me take him from her. I explained to her that Goldie needed to be flushed down the toilet and it was just his body, his soul was already in heaven with all the other goldfish. This seemed to offer her some comfort, but she wanted to be the one to put him in the toilet. So with my soup spoon, she scooped up Goldie and we put him in toilet and watched him twirl into the great toilet grave.

Kylie is still sobbing as I am typing this. She already drew a picture of him so she will have it forever. Poor sensitive Kylie. She has such a bleeding heart. RIP Goldie.
